LGBT community raises more than $24K for transgender student's funeral
College leaders and friends have helped raise more than $24,000 on GoFundMe for funeral costs after a California transgender student took his own life.Daine Grey, who was 22, was reportedly disowned by his parents after coming out as a transgender man last year, according to NBC News.After Grey's body went unclaimed at the coroner's office for 10 days, leaders from the City College of San Francisco's Queer Resource Center decided to step in to help and set up a GoFundMe page.“Our Queer Community lost one of their bright stars,” wrote Lady Katerina, manager of the Queer Resource Center, on the page. “We need help in providing Final Dignity Rites for Daine. As you know funeral expenses are expensive especially when someone had nothing. Please help share the love and give Daine his Dignity.”The $17,000 fundraising goal was surpassed on the page within two days."Daine was a promising young student who was a gay trans man active with the City College of San Francisco Queer Resource Center, and who advocated for awareness of ADA needs," according to a City College of San Francisco Facebook post this week.
