Montgomery law firm involved in cases against e-cigarette companies
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery-based Beasley Allen Law Firm is involved in a number of cases against e-cigarette companies.
Law firm officials say with most of their cases the problem is with the battery in the e-cigarettes. The cells have blown up in use, causing serious injuries.
There have been at least two deaths in the U.S. On Jan. 29, a 24-year-old Texas man died when an e-cigarette exploded in his face. In May 2018, an e-cigarette exploded in a St. Petersburg, Florida man’s face.
Attorneys say in most cases it can be traced back to the seller not properly communicating warnings about how to care for batteries.
"I think these cases will really pick up in 2019 and early 2020. After that, hopefully the problems will start to go away as more consumers receive better warnings, are better educated about the products they're using. And overall, we hope the quality of these products gets better,” said William Sutton.
Beasley Allen officials say they’re representing about 20 individuals in these types cases - mostly in the southeast.
They’ve already won a case in Florida and have another trial scheduled.
