MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Wednesday, the new 2020 Hyundai Sonata made its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show.

A delegation of Montgomery leaders representing the city, county, and business community attended the New York International Auto Show to get the first look at the redesign.

Hyundai will soon roll out a new, much more sporty Sonata sedan that takes on the look of a four-door coupe. It’s styling is a major departure from the current model, which last saw a redesign in 2014.

“Sonata is our signature product,” said Hyundai Motor America Product, Corporate and Digital Planning Vice President Mike O’Brien. “Having been one of our first and most successful nameplates, Sonata is our legacy, and it needs to be special and memorable in all attributes. Sonata signifies our vision for future Hyundai designs, great active safety systems and cutting-edge technology that is effortless.”

The 2020 model will be lower, wider, and longer than its predecessor thanks to Hyundai’s “Sensuous Sportiness” design concept. The company says its the first model to be based on Hyundai’s new, innovative vehicle platform, which delivers increased strength and reduced weight to enable improvements in design, safety, efficiency and driving performance.

There are a number of first-of-its-kind features, including a digital key which allows the vehicle to be unlocked, started and driven without a physical key, via a smartphone.

“We are excited about how well Hyundai is doing. Hyundai is thriving. We’re seeing growth. They are one of our biggest partners in the business community," said Montgomery County Commission Vice Chairman Ronda Walker. “We are so appreciative that they are in Montgomery. We’re happy to be in New York to support that and there are just some exciting things ahead."

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is currently in the midst of a $388 million dollar expansion that is expected to wrap up by May.

Production of the sedan will start in September in Montgomery. The Sonata has been build at the company’s Montgomery, Alabama, plant since 2006.

In addition to the Sonata, Hyundai also introduced the all new Hyundai Venue Wednesday.
