RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil striker Luis Fabiano parted ways with Vasco da Gama on Thursday after an injury-wracked year with the Rio de Janeiro club.

The 37-year-old, who had been under contract until December, was released by mutual agreement, Vasco said in a statement on their official website.

"It wouldn't be fair for the club and the Vasco supporters to make them wait another few months for my recovery at such an important time for the club," Fabiano said.

"Thank you very much to the club's management for understanding my situation and the Vasco supporters for all the support they have given me since my arrival here."

Fabiano made just 20 appearances for Vasco, scoring 20 goals.

The former Sevilla and Tianjin Quanjian player, who has been capped 45 times for Brazil's national team, did not say whether he would continue his career at another club.
