RIO DE JANEIRO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Vasco da Gama sacked coach Alberto Valentim following the team's loss to Flamengo in the final of the Rio de Janeiro state championship on Sunday.
He will be replaced on an interim basis by Vasco's U20 coach Marcos Valadares, football director Alexandre Faria said.
"We thank [Alberto] for his dedication. I'm certain that we will come back stronger than ever," Faria told reporters. "I'm sure the fans will get behind us and that we will overcome [this situation]."
The 2-0 scoreline on Sunday replicated the result of the first leg, handing Flamengo a 4-0 aggregate victory.
Vasco will open their Brazilian Serie A campaign with an away clash against Atletico Paranaense on April 28.
