A 9-year-old girl was bitten on her arms and legs in West Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon by a dog who also attacked a police officer trying to rescue her.

The dog was shot.

Police said they were called to the 5300 block of Hadfield Street just after 3 p.m. As they tried to help the girl, the dog bit an officer in the thigh. A second officer fired at the dog twice, killing it.

The girl, whose condition was not available, was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The wounded officer from Philadelphia’s 12th Police District was listed in stable condition.

Police did not immediately respond to requests for updated information.
