Mother arrested after beating 2-year-old with brick, says Walker Co. Sheriff's Office

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WBMA) – Walker County Sheriff's Office announced 33-year-old Melody Smith was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse after allegedly hitting her 2-year-old son with a brick.

According to the sheriff's office, they responded to a call of a small child being assaulted in the Goodsprings area. As they neared the location of the call, authorities said they found the child being rushed to the hospital by family members.

The child was then airlifted to Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

During the investigation, authorities said they discovered Smith had allegedly assaulted the boy with a brick and also tried to choke him.

The Walker County Sheriff's Office said the child sustained multiple injuries but is in stable condition at the hospital. The sheriff's office added the child is now in the custody of a family member and DHR has opened an investigation.

Smith is being held in the Walker County Jail with a bond of $250,000.
