World Cup Champion’s Biglaw Connection

Even the USWNT has a link to Biglaw.

Are you tired of hearing about the supremely excellent U.S. Women’s National Team yet? No? Me either! In the course of capturing their fourth star (representing the four U.S. World Cup victories), they’ve also captured the imagination of fans across the country. And the good news, from an Above the Law perspective, is that one of the starters has a Biglaw connection.

One of the stars of the USWNT was Crystal Dunn, the tenacious defender that moved from the midfield position she plays at for the North Carolina Courage to better fit in the national team’s scheme. The New York native wowed the world with her soccer moves —- particularly during her stellar performance in the quarterfinals against France, and part of her essential support system is her parents Rhonda and Vincent Dunn. Vincent is the co-managing partner of Norton Rose’s New York office.

In an interview with Law.com the high-powered partner plays a stereotypical dad, beaming with pride for his daughter:

“I did spend time thinking of some of the many days traveling to soccer games when she was young, when her jersey was too big for her and when I had to help her tie her cleats,” Dunn said. “From those days to a World Cup championship—a great deal of hard work and sacrifices have paid off.”

He and his wife were able to travel to France for the full 22 days of the tournament to support Crystal (shout out to the technology that makes balancing a corporate lending practice and attending the World Cup to support your daughter a little easier). Vincent describes the experience as somewhat surreal:

“The sounds were crazy. The fans were nuts,” Dunn a corporate lending partner, said. “People who I don’t know would come up and take pictures with me, and I would always say ‘I just want you to know I’m not Crystal.’”

Vincent credits the firm for their support that allowed him to experience this, saying “Norton Rose and everybody else went on the journey with me.”
