Tennessee Vols morning report: Basketball narrative flips

The Tennessee Vols men’s and women’s basketball teams flipping their storylines over the weekend lead our Volunteers news for Monday, Feb. 18, 2019.

Well that was a crazy weekend. The Tennessee Vols had opposite storylines from what they have seen all year with their men’s and women’s basketball programs, and we get to both of those as we recap the weekend.

Our morning report on Rocky Top is like a typical Monday, recapping all the big games over the weekend. Not only did basketball flip, but the baseball and softball narrative did too. One team was much happier than the other, and it’s not the one you’d expect.

We’ll close this out with football news about the staff, but that’s from Friday, so it’s a bit of old news. That’s why we’ve moved the football story to the bottom. Instead, let’s start with all the big basketball news that happened over the weekend.

Rick Barnes speaks after Kentucky loss – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team lost to the Kentucky Wildcats 86-69 Monday to fall to 23-2 and 11-1 in the SEC. Kentucky improved to 21-4 and 10-2 in the SEC. Here is a bit of what Rick Barnes said after that loss.

"“What we were doing on offense, not doing what we wanted to do, we let it affect us on the defensive end. Then again, they were able to get offensive rebounds in the first half, getting 50/50 balls. We had a chance to get it a couple stops, then we gave up the offensive rebound. When we went with the small lineup, PJ Washington pretty much had his way.”"

Lady Vols upset Missouri – Associated Press

The Tennessee Lady Vols generated some newfound momentum Sunday with a huge road upset over the Missouri Tigers, the team that beat them in Knoxville back in January to begin their six-game losing streak. With the win, UT improves to 17-8 and 6-6 in the SEC while Mizzou falls to 19-8 and 8-5 in the league.

"Rennia Davis made two free throws to break a tie with 52.6 seconds left as Tennessee edged Missouri 62-60 on Sunday to win for the fifth time in its last six games.The score was tied at 60-all when Davis pulled down an offensive rebound and got fouled."

Tennessee baseball sweeps opening weekend – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

The Tennessee Vols baseball team made history to open up head coach Tony Vitello’s second season. Against the Appalachian State Mountaineers, they did one thing they hadn’t done in 54 years and another they hadn’t done in five years.

"The Vols (3-0) completed a series sweep of Appalachian State (0-3) with a 3-0 win at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, and reached a few milestones in the process.The win marked the first time since the 1965 season that Tennessee won three-straight shutouts, the first time in program history that they held an opponent scoreless in a series and the first time since 2014 that the Vols last swept an opening series."

Tennessee softball struggles at Clearwater – UTSports

Entering the St. Pete/Clearwater Invitational at 5-0 and No. 6 in the nation, the Tennessee Lady Vols softball team produced mixed results over the weekend. They did beat the No. 24 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish Friday 8-0 along with the Minnesota Golden Gophers later that day and the Utah Utes on Saturday, but they lost to the No. 23 ranked James Madison Dukes in an upset also on Saturday and then to the No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Florida State Seminoles Sunday night.

"Tennessee heads to Johnson City, Tenn., on Tuesday to play ETSU in a midweek matchup. The game begins at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed via a live radio broadcast on UTSports.com."

Tennessee football moves staff around – ESPN News Services

Tennessee Vols football head coach Jeremy Pruitt announced staff changes to his team over the weekend. The changes included Tee Martin coming to coach wide receivers and Derrick Ansley coming to coach defensive backs and be the defensive coordinator, replacing Kevin Sherrer’s role as the coordinator.

"Sherrer remains at Tennessee, coaching special teams and inside linebackers as part of the shuffling within the staff. Chris Weinke, a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Florida State in 2000, moves from running backs coach to quarterbacks coach. David Johnson will coach running backs after working with receivers last season."
