Arizona State defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales has not interviewed for, nor been offered the head coaching position at the University of New Mexico, according to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro.

There is a belief that Gonzales would have an interest in being the head coach for New Mexico. Gambadoro reports Gonzales does not have a desire to take any head-coaching job outside of New Mexico’s at this time.

There have been multiple schools inquiring with the Sun Devils and Gonzales as to his availability, asking if they can speak with him about potential head coach openings. Those schools include Colorado State, the University of Nevada Las Vegas and the University of Texas-San Antonio, with all those jobs now being filled.

Gonzales attended New Mexico from 1994-98 and has family in the area. He served as a graduate assistant from 1999 to 2002 and also was the Lobos’ video coordinator from 2003 to 2005 before being promoted to a full-time assistant. Gonzales coached the team’s safeties, kickers, punters and long snappers from 2006 to 2008.

Taking the ASU DC job in 2018, Gonzales led the Sun Devils defense to their fewest points allowed since the 2012 season before overseeing the defense again this season, with an added position of assistant head coach under Herm Edwards.

Gonzales also coached at San Diego State, working with safeties for six seasons before becoming the defensive coordinator in 2017 for one year prior to joining Arizona State.

Per Gambadoro, the understanding is that Gonzales has no interest in taking a defensive coordinator position at another Power Five school.
