LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine field hockey team starts a stretch of six straight road games on Friday when it travels to Spartanburg, South Carolina to take on the Valkyries of Converse College in a 6 p.m. game.
The Knights stay on the road on Saturday with a neutral site matchup with Mount Olive at noon. The game will be played in Charlotte, North Carolina on the campus of Queens University.
Bellarmine is currently 2-2 on the season. Opening with three straight teams ranked in the top 10 the Knights made it through that stretch 1-2 that included two overtime games. The Knights most recent game was a 9-1 triumph over Frostburg State with the nine goals representing the most offense produced by a Bellarmine team since the 2014 season.
Mandi Isom, who led Bellarmine in scoring last season, is back on top of the BU scoring list this season with seven points on two goals and three assists. The good news for Coach
Devanny Boisvert is that eight different players have notched goals with the season with
Alex Hill,
Alexa Rastigue,
Merit Harris and
April Paulson all tied with Isom for the team lead with two.
Defensively, Rastigue and
Jillian Fazio haven proven tough on the back line with each recording a pair of defensive saves in the first four games. In cage,
Breanna McWhorter and
Heather Gregory have spilt while putting up similar numbers. McWhorter has a save percentage of exactly 80 while Gregory is at 76.9. Meanwhile, Gregory sports a 2.10 goals against average while McWhorter is at 2.13.
Against Converse, the Knights face a squad that is winless in four games with only one goal scored this season. The Valkyries have played solid competition with losses coming at the hands of Southern New Hampshire, Limestone, Mount Olive and Coker.
On Saturday, Bellarmine meets a Mount Olive team that is 1-3 with its lone win coming over Converse. The Knights and Trojans have one common opponent this season, East Stroudsburg. Ranked third in the country, ESU shut out both Bellarmine and Mount Olive, taking a 4-0 win over the Knights and a 7-0 victory over the Trojans.
