Where to celebrate Earth Day this week around Atlanta

Spring is finally here, and with the season comes the annual celebration of Earth Day. Around Atlanta, a host of activities pay homage to Mother Earth while sharing ways we all can do our part to help take care of her.

From educational talks and nature tours to arts and crafts, recycling initiatives, and plenty of fun for all ages, there’s much to choose from for those wanting to take part.

Earth Day Celebration, Buckhead style

Hosted by Livable Buckhead at various locations through the week, this Earth Day Celebration seeks to teach attendees how to be sustainable at home and work plus how to build a terrarium. Participants also will receive a free LED lightbulb.

Hours for these free events vary by day; venues include 3630 Peachtree (Monday), Buckhead Tower and Terminus Commons (Tuesday), Piedmont Center (Wednesday and Thursday), and Resurgens Plaza (Thursday).

Earth Day Tours

Each day this week from 10 to 11 a.m., Southface opens its campus to visitors who want an in-depth look at how the company uses various technologies to make their buildings sustainable.

These technologies include special windows, skylights, composting toilets, carpets made from recycled fishnets, rain water collection tanks, and more. Tours are free, but require registration.

Earth Week

Why celebrate Earth Day when you can make it a weeklong event?

Each day this week at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, visitors can join “Michael Recycle” for an interactive Readers’ Theater program on conservation, or learn about the ecosystems found in our own backyards during the Music & Movement program.

The Art Studio, Built It Lab, and Science Bar also will host a variety of themed activities and crafts throughout each day. Closed on Wednesday, museum prices vary by day and method purchased (online versus onsite).

Earth Day at Atlanta Botanical Garden

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Atlanta Botanical Garden, enjoy Earth Day drop-in activities like making art from natural and re-purposed art, getting up close and personal with earthworms, and playing in the dirt with some hands-on gardening projects.

Also scheduled are programs discussing tropical frogs as well as stories with Mother Nature at the Children’s Garden Amphitheater. All events are free with garden admission, which is $21.95 for adults and $18.95 for children ages 3 through 12.

Go Green with Lenox

Taking place in the Macy’s Court from 11 a.m. to noon, the free Go Green with Lenox Square Family Fun Event offers attendees a whole host of activities.

Get your face painted, enjoy a book reading, make a Garden-in-a-Bag creation, grab some snacks, enter to win some giveaways, and much more.

Earth Day Celebration

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Blue Heron Nature Preserve in Buckhead invites families and guests of all ages to come and take part in a full schedule of free activities for its Earth Day Celebration.

Take a Native Plant Walk, enjoy Exhale Yoga, tour the Blueway Trail, participate in a self-guided workshop at Plein Air Art, compete in a bio-blitz guided scavenger hunt, and much more. Many of the events require registration, so check the website before heading to Blue Heron.

Kid’s Recycle Day

Grab the kids, and head to Live Thrive Atlanta’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) for a day of fun and activities at Kid’s Recycle Day.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., learn about the importance of recycling and reuse through arts and crafts with recycled materials by Scrap Atlanta, making DIY organic body scrubs with IWI Fresh Garden Day Spa Green Girls, family fun games with Fulton County Environmental Education Group, and more.

Earth Day @ MJCCA

Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta

Open to the community, this Earth Day celebration at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta welcomes locals and visitors to celebrate Mother Earth and environmental protection during this social event.

From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., plant edible herbs in self-decorated pots before learning how to cook a Moroccan carrot salad. Tickets are $25 for MJCCA members and $30 for community attendees. Registration is requested by Thursday, April 25.
