On heels of bankruptcy filing, Midtown’s ‘castle’ hits the market

One of Midtown’s more unique home renovations is up for grabs.

Following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in November, the owner of Midtown’s “castle” property has put it back on the market, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Located at 87 15th Street, a few blocks west of Piedmont Park and east of the Arts Center MARTA Station, the 12,500-square-foot former house gives the appearance of a bona fide fortress, complete with an imposing stone wall.

Standing five stories beside the Woodruff Arts Center, the property was renovated in recent years to accommodate a restaurant, Rose & Rye.

It’s now owned by MLAC Castle Atlanta LLC, which bought it in 2013 for $10 million.

The owner reportedly believes the property, saddled with more than $4.5 million in debt, is now worth $5.75 million.

Real estate firm JLL has been tapped to market the property, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports.

The listing notes the atypical house was designed and built by Ferdinand Dallas McMillan, an eccentric businessman, in the early 1900s.

Back then, it was dubbed “Fort Peace.”

But by the 1980s, the castle was in such a state of disrepair, then-Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young called it “a hunk of junk.” Threats of demolition loomed for years.

The property also sits less than a block from where the much-anticipated No. 2 Opus Place skyscraper project has been planned for years.
