Summerhill Brewery Halfway Crooks Opens for Beers and Meat Pies

Summerhill brewery Halfway Crooks Beer officially opens Saturday, July 6, at 11:30 a.m. next to soft serve ice cream shop Big Softie and Little Tart Bakeshop on Georgia Avenue.

The brewery, owned by electrical engineer Shawn Bainbridge, Tim Kilic, and Belgium-born brewer Joran Van Ginderachte, includes a ten-barrel brewhouse, scattered table seating running the length of the tasting room, and two bars — one downstairs and the other upstairs on the second floor. The latter features a louver ceiling and views of the downtown Atlanta skyline and Georgia State University’s stadium to the west.

Expect various ales and lagers, barrel-aged beers, and New Zealand meat pies and fries doled out from a small window beside the tasting room bar created by Jake Harvey of Heaps ATL.

Currently on draft are a blended table lager Mineral Ills, an American pale ale called Settings, Belgian pale ale Sanguine, and a table beer with aged hops named Velo.

As for food, there’s Belgian fries with the option to add a stewed meat sauce as well as shoestring fries, pork rolls, and $5 savory pies, including beef and cheddar, spicy Thai chicken, chana masala, Alabama chicken, and Carolina BBQ pork.

Bainbridge, who graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech, tells Eater Atlanta the beer menu above the bar downstairs and the bank of televisions along the wall at the entrance to the brewery were created using several Raspberry Pi devices (micro computers used by tech hobbyists) to control the displays. Display fonts resemble a VisiCalc spreadsheet with ASCII art on a green monochrome monitor.

The tech theme carries throughout Halfway Crooks, and may eventually include old video game consoles and other defunct computer devices.
