Chicago-based third wave roasters Intelligentsia Coffee is opening its first Texas coffee shop in downtown Austin at 208 Nueces Street, debuting sometime in late spring 2019. The new cafe will be found in the lobby of the upcoming office building Third + Shoal.
Intelligentsia Coffee’s Austin menu will include specialty coffee and coffee drinks. There will be food from local vendors and restaurants, though those haven’t been named yet. The space will be designed by local architect Scott Magic.
To gear up for the Texas cafe, Intelligentsia even opened up a training lab at 1603 South Congress Avenue in July.
Intelligentsia opened 23 years ago by co-founders Doug Zell and Emily Mange in Chicago, and expanded with locations in New York and Los Angeles. California-based coffee company Peet’s acquired a majority stake in Intelligentsia, an answer to the coffee roaster’s call for a private equity buyer to acquire the company in 2015 for $100 million dollars. This acquisition was right on the heels of its Stumptown Coffee purchase. It added new cafes in Boston too.
