Texas Barbecue Icon Dies
Rick Schmidt, the former owner of Lockhart barbecue restaurant Kreuz Market, died this week at the age of 73. Kreuz Market opened way back in the 1900s. Schmidt’s father, Edgar bought it in 1948, and Rick and his brother took over in 1984. Eventually, there was a barbecue family feud which led to Rick moving the restaurant to a new location while his sister, Nina Sells converted the original building into the new Smitty’s Market. Schmidt sold the new Kreuz to his son Keith in 2011. The funeral visitation will take place tomorrow, Thursday, February 14, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Maxwell, Texas, with a reception at Kreuz.
