Ed McCaffrey is not actually heading to North Carolina, but rather to Northern Colorado.

Sometimes, school abbreviations create some confusion, as the University of South Carolina-University of Southern California battle illustrates. A fun example of that came Thursday from Longmont, Colorado-based radio station 104.3 The Fan (an ESPN Radio affiliate), which briefly reported Thursday that Ed McCaffrey (the head football coach at Highland Ranch, CO’s Valor Christian School, a former Stanford and NFL star, and the father of current Carolina Panthers’ star Christian McCaffrey) was taking the head coaching job at North Carolina. But North Carolina has a head coach in Mack Brown, and McCaffrey has actually been hired at the other UNC, Northern Colorado. The station later corrected to reflect that. Here’s their first tweet, via Jake Shapiro:

Yeah, that’s a miss, all right. And a bit of logic would probably have suggested that the North Carolina UNC (Division I FBS, in the ACC) wouldn’t have fired Brown after only one season and then immediately hired a high school coach, whereas Northern Colorado (Division I FCS, in the Big Sky Conference) is a more reasonable landing spot for a Colorado figure like McCaffrey. Still, we all make mistakes, and the station corrected this before too long. But that’s still a funny thing to get wrong.
