Bannerghatta Road residents won’t let the dust settle

Many roads not asphalted and several others dug up, making most of them non-motorable

Residents of Bannerghatta and adjoining areas have had enough of the dust and the patch-work that is the road network in their area. On Sunday, the irate citizens will organise a protest to bring to authorities’ attention, the poor condition of their roads.

Bannerghatta Road has been in dire straits for a while now. The recent Metro works has only made matters worse. Residents say all the connecting roads to Bannerghatta in the Begur ward are non-motorable. “It is not just a back-bending experience, but also very unhealthy as we are constantly inhaling dust,” says one of the residents.

There are portions of a road that were dug up and not covered properly. Hence the patchwork is evident everywhere. The other half of the road is just plain muddy and uneven making it all the more difficult for commuters to travel along this stretch. It has been in this pathetic condition from the past two years. “A number of infrastructure projects are on currently, like the Cauvery pipeline, sewage line and underground cable work etc. Surprisingly, there seems to be little or no coordination between various stakeholders and roads are just dug up as per thir mercy,” says Amit Kumar, a resident of Eagle Bridge.

As it is the beginning of the summer season, the scorching heat adds to the dust. So every time any vehicle passes by these roads; be it a two wheeler or truck, the dust rises in the air making the atmosphere dusty and the passersby need at least a few minutes to catch their breath.

The mostorists and the shopkeepers are the worst affected.

Add to his, Hulimavu and Begur Koppa Main Road are a hub of educational institutions. There are approximately two schools in the vicinity and the children are the worst affected. In the mornings, when the kids stand near their apartment gates waiting for their school busses, the dust rises to such an extent that it results in children falling sick very often, due to dust allergies, fever, eye irritation problems. This has caused a matter of concern for the parents as it’s the month of exams.

When contacted, Anjanappa, corporator of Begur ward said, “We have started asphalting the roads in and around Akshayanagar as of now. We are doing our best to rectify the situation at the earliest.”
