Bengaluru turning into a ‘garbage city’ again?

Residents complain that pourakarmikas aren’t picking up the waste

Even though the National Green Tribunal has given strict directions to ensure that the garbage should be segregated and managed at the ward level itself, things seem to be happening otherwise. The black spots seem to be reappearing across the city again. Several residents say that garbage is not being collected regularly.

Anu Prasad, a resident of Roopena Agrahara says one needs to stay home till late noon to ensure they do not miss the garbage collector. “They are supposed to whistle when they arrive but they don’t. They do not arrive on time as well. Since my husband and I work and have to leave between 8 am and 9 am, it gets really difficult to keep a track of the waste pickers,” she says.

Jaideep Sharma, a resident has tweeted that the garbage is not being collected regularly and is getting piled up at Hoodi, where he recently moved in to.

D Randeep, Additional Commissioner, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), says, it could be due to the ongoing transition. “Since new tenders are being called, the pourakarmikas would probably have lost interest in work. But as long as the new tender is not allotted, they have to do their jobs. They have been instructed to clear the garbage.” The tender process will be over by this week, he claims. “Vendors for 60 wards have been found. We’ll have to finish the negotiations and then look at approving them,” he says.

Tenders for animal waste to be floated this week

As per the solid waste management mandate, animal waste also has to be cleared by the solid waste management team of the BBMP. The city generates 44 metric tonnes of animal waste every day.
The civic body will be floating new tenders for animal waste. D Randeep, BBMP Additional Commissioner, says, “We are looking at a comprehensive package for each zone where somebody can pick up this waste and take it to the rendering plant. At the plant, the animal waste will be heated and converted to animal feed. It will get converted to small pellets and can be sent to piggeries.” He adds that the tenders will be floated for the vendors who have these rendering plants or can tie up with them. “There are rendering plants in Hoskote and other areas. The tenders should be floated by the end of this week,” he adds.
