A family of five were killed in an accident on the flyover near Kogilu Cross on the KIA Road after a speeding ambulance crashed into the car they were travelling in during the wee hours of Monday. The family was returning to their house in RT Nagar and the 108 ambulance was going towards Devanahalli after having shifted a patient to a hospital.

The driver of the ambulance who was reportedly speeding lost control and came on to the other side of the road by jumping the centre median and collided head on with the car. The Yelahanka traffic police have registered a case.

The deceased are Deepankar Dey, 42, Swagatha Chowdhary, 42, Dhuva Dey, 14, Jayathi, 65, and Sujaya Showdhary, 45. Among the deceased, Swagatha and Sujaya are sisters and Jayathi is their mother. The family who are from West Bengal were staying in RT Nagar. Deepankar was a private firm employee, while Swagatha was a school teacher. Swagatha’s sister and mother were staying at Chennai. Sujaya was working for a tech firm in Chennai. As Jayathi had liver problems, Sujaya had brought her to her sister’s house in RT Nagar for a medical check-up. The two had come to city from Chennai just three days back.

“The entire family had gone out on Sunday and after having dinner at a resort, were returning back home to RT Nagar. Around 1.15 am, when they were coming on the flyover near the Kogilu cross in a car, the ambulance going towards Devanahalli jumped the road median and collided head on with the car killing all the five. Four of the five were killed on the spot, while the other died en route to the hospital. The impact of the collision was so severe, the traffic police had a tough time in separating both the vehicles with the help of the fire and emergency service personnel and removing the bodies,” said an officer.

The bodies were sent to the Yelahanka Government Hospital’s mortuary for the post-mortem.

“Speeding by the ambulance driver was the cause for the accident. The driver was with an attendant in the ambulance at the time of the accident,” the officer added.
The Yelahanka traffic police have registered a case and are further investigating.
