Bangalore University is getting environment conscious and how. The university will now hold visits for its students to polluted fields to collect the water, analyse it on campus and also train them to treat the waste water. This comes as the university has re-written its Environmental Science Book according to the new prescribed syllabus based on the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) guidelines.

N Nandini, Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, who has co-authored the book, says, “In May this year, UGC wrote to Vice-Chancellors of all its affiliated universities and to colleges that every UG student must compulsorily study Environmental Science Course and so we have re-written our Environmental Science book with more relevant, ongoing environmental issues and challenges. It will remain a core subject and will be assigned 100 marks as before.”
Though the module has been in place since 2013, this year, UGC wrote to colleges and universities to remind them that if even one of them was not carrying out the mandatory six-month course, it must start now.

The new book titled ‘Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) - Environmental Studies’ authored by N Nandini, N Sudha and Sucharita Tandon of BU, was released during the Environment Day celebrations at the university on June 7 and is yet to hit the market and the bookstores. It will be provided to students this semester. The new book has eight units – Introduction, Ecosystems, Natural Resources, Environmental Policies and Practices, Human Communities and the Environment and Field Work to be taught to students of all UG courses like BA, BCom, BHM, BCA, BBA, BE, BSc (HS), BSc, BSc (FAD) and BA – Journalism.

She adds, “Earlier there was no fixed book for students. This book will help them find all the topics at one place.”
