A day after the Centre empowered the States to take a call on opening commercial establishments and resuming public transport, the Karnataka government on Monday decided to resume most of the businesses barring those restricted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Besides allowing operations of buses, taxis, autorickshaws, the government also decided to allow intra-state train services. On Sundays, all establishments will remain shut and there will be a complete curfew.


a meeting with his Cabinet colleagues and senior officials, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that the government will allow conditional resuming of services by the State Road Transport Corporations (RTC) and private operators throughout the State barring in containment zones. Similarly, it was decided to allow autorickshaw, taxi, and maxi cab services, to operate between 7 am and 7 pm. Number of passengers in each bus is restricted and not standing passenger will be allowed. In Maxi cabs, three passengers with a driver will be allowed. Taxi aggregators Ola and Uber also allowed to operate. People travelling without masks will be penalised, CM said.

Saying that the State-run buses will incur losses, the CM said that the government would pay the RTC to make up the losses. Unlike Kerala and Odisha, the government decided not to increase the fare as they would be running half the capacity of each of the buses. Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi said that care has been taken to ensure that drivers and conductors remain safe. Driver’s enclosure will be sealed he said to avoid any contact with any passengers.


The CM also stated that inter-state trains till end of this month.
