Students want profs suspended; two of them haven’t taught a single class

The students of Bengaluru Central University’s (BCU) Commerce department have made a demand to the vice-chancellor that professors who do not take their classes should be suspended. Around 150 students in the third-semester have alleged that two professors in particular, Professor M Muniraju and Professor Muninarayanappa, have not taken a single class. There are only 20 days left to this semester, which makes the students a worried lot.

The BU versus BCU debate has left the kids out in the cold. The M.Com classes are conducted in the BCU campus, but
BCU faculty say they are supposed to take care only of the first-semester students. “These students belong to BU and BU is responsible for the teachers not taking classes,” said Professor C Japhet, Vice Chancellor, BCU.

The students, say, their classes had been allotted to Professor M Muniraju and Professor Muninarayanappa who is currently the chairman of the Commerce Department, BCU, had not taken a single class. “There has been not even a single class that two teachers took. We are left with just 20 days and we do not know how to complete the syllabus,” said a third-semester student. “We demand that whoever is not taking a class for us should be suspended,” he added.

I am taking my regular classes. I really do not know why these people are putting the blame on me

However, Japhet said, “I convened a meeting after the students approached me and asked the teachers to adhere to the timetable.

But we have noticed that the third-semester students belong to BU campus and hence, BU should be answerable.” Nevertheless, the BCU V-C has asked the registrar, Ramachandra Gowda, to take classes for third-semester students.

The vice-chancellor of BU, Professor Venugopal KR, said, “When I asked the departmental chairperson, he said teachers have been allotted for these classes. But if those classes have not been taken, I will definitely take severe action. Teachers are meant to teach and do their research. We will see to it that nothing hampers the classes.” Venugopal also said that the teachers will now have to forgo their leaves and conduct extra classes to complete the syllabus.

I am taking classes in Jnanabharathi campus and not in BCU. The third-semester students are also there

–Professor M Muniraju

The professors have protested that they are not in the wrong. Professor M Muniraju, who was the former chairperson of the department, went on record to say he did not like the administration by the current chairperson Muninarayanappa. “He has asked his own people to come and teach, without consulting others, and that is not right. However, I am taking classes in Jnanabharathi campus and not in the Central University campus. The third-semester students are also there. Muninarayanappa should know why the lectures at Central campus are not taking place. There is no problem with my lectures.”

On the other hand, professor Muninarayanappa said that people are trying to defame him. He says, “I am taking my regular classes and whenever there are meetings, I take compensatory classes on Saturdays. I really do not know why these people are putting the blame on me.”

However, when BM did a random check on students’ timetable, it seemed that the classes slotted for both Muniraju and Muninarayanappa had not been held in the BCU campus.
