Without streetlights and footpaths, walking in the city has anyway been a harrowing experience. Regular rains in the evenings are plunging parts of the city with streetlights into darkness due to power outages.

A walk through the stretch from HSR to Iblur Junction reveals the truth about Bengaluru’s night life. Long stretches along the Outer Ring Road in this area have faulty streetlights and the few lights that work go off due to power cuts. The areas under the flyovers, where most pedestrians walk, are left in pitch darkness every time even a bit of rain falls.

“Pedestrians have to wade through the watery streets in the dark. The lack of footpaths means people have to walk on the roads and jostling along with vehicles. Vehicles speeding in the rain are a major danger to the pedestrians. On many roads, where water flows after it rains, pedestrians have to deal with water splashing on them each time a vehicle passes,”said Anuj Kumar, a techie.

Many areas that have footpaths, still are not pedestrian-friendly because many times construction material and debris is dumped on it. Gear School Road connecting Sarjapur Road and Bellandur Gate is one such stretch where footpaths are unusable due to debris and poor maintenance. With monsoon fast approaching, it remains to be seen what the authorities will do to keep pedestrians safe, especially during rainy evenings.
