What’s new at the Birmingham Zoo? We found out

The Birmingham Zoo is a local treasure in need of some extra support right now. Whether you’re participating in their upcoming virtual event or dropping by for a visit, the Zoo is ready to welcome you back. Check out all the details here!

What’s New

The Happy:

Back in April, we wrote about the newest additions to the Birmingham Zoo. The Pallas cat Mischa and her kittens are part of the latest exhibition, which is the South American Predator and Primate buildings.

The Sad:

You may notice some of your favorite faces are missing at the Zoo. Tadpole, a 41-year-old male Nile hippopotamus and Matt, a 14-year-old male Komodo dragon passed away in June.

How to Visit Right Now

Good news, Bham. The Zoo is open and operating! They’ve reduced their hours and limited their capacity in order to keep guests as safe as possible, as well as implementing other safety precautions.

All visitors over the age of six are required to wear face coverings. Timed admission tickets are not required, but guests are encouraged to purchase tickets online prior to visiting in order to minimize contact with Zoo staff.

Entry will be monitored to ensure limited capacity, and hours of operation have been reduced. You can also expect one-way traffic flow, sanitation procedures and more. You can read more about safety measures and visitation info here.

What’s Coming Up

In honor of the Birmingham Zoo’s 65th anniversary, they’re hosting a virtual celebration on September 10th. ZooRendezvous will be a virtual luau you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Or, host your safe circle for a watch party.

The event is free, but it is a fundraiser for the Zoo, who is currently projecting a $2.7 million operating loss by the end of the year. You can show your support by bidding on some awesome silent auction items during the event.

You can also pre-order exciting meals, wine and swag that will be delivered to you the day of the event. Here are the deets:
