A pedestrian hit by a minivan Tuesday night in Billings was hospitalized with injuries including "obvious head trauma," according to Lt. Brian Krivitz of the Billings Police Department.
The crash was reported at about 5:50 p.m. and police believe it occurred on North 27th Street near the Burger King.Â
Witnesses told police the injured man had been slowly walking across North 27th Street from the area of the Denny's when he was hit by a southbound minivan. He was not using a crosswalk, Krivitz said.
The man was awake as responders treated his injuries. He was eventually placed on a stretcher and put into the back of an ambulance.Â
The minivan hit the man on its passenger side, and he may have landed up to 25 feet away from the vehicle, Krivitz said. Afterward, the van, which appeared to have a partially shattered windshield, pulled into the Billings Gazette parking lot as responders arrived.

Speaking at about 6:15 p.m., Krivitz said police would continue to hold the scene pending a medical update on the man's condition. The BPD crash scene investigation team was not immediately dispatched, but Krivitz said law enforcement with crash scene investigation training were on scene.Â
Liquid and broken glass on the sidewalk may have come from an alcoholic beverage the pedestrian was carrying, Krivitz said.
Police blocked off southbound lanes of North 27th Street beginning at Sixth Avenue North and extending south to the Burger King drive-thru during their initial response.
