The Bismarck School Board has identified four candidates to serve as the school district's next superintendent.
The school board opened applications for the superintendent positions from late October until Dec. 7. Nine people applied for the position, including the principals of three Bismarck schools.
On Thursday, the board accepted candidate recommendations from the consulting firm Olson Effertz and reviewed all nine applications, selecting four finalists.
The finalistsÂ
• Joel Dvorak served as the assistant superintendent then superintendent for Natrona County School District in Casper, Wyo., for 10 years before becoming a consultant to the Wyoming Department of Education. A native of Minto, he has bachelor's degree in science from Mayville State University and a master's and doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Wyoming.

• Jason Hornbacher is the principal of Dorothy Moses Elementary School. Hornbacher also has served as principal at three other Bismarck schools. He has a bachelor's degree in education and master's and doctorate degrees in educational leadership from the University of North Dakota.
• Shawn Oban is the principal of Jeannette Myhre Elementary School and the district's fine arts coordinator. Oban previously was the principal at Roosevelt and Highland Acres elementary schools. He has a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Mary and master's and doctorate degrees in educational leadership from UND.
• Tabetha Rabenberg theis principal at Horizon Middle School. Rabenberg previously held education positions in Iowa, including as a principal and dean of students. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Black Hills State University and master's and doctorate degrees in educational leadership from Drake University.
The school board will review the finalists' applications over the next month while Olson Effertz checks references and runs background checks. The candidates are scheduled to be interviewed late next month.
A superintendent is expected to start July 1.
