10 YEARS AGO (2009): The Bismarck Demons picked up a win and a tie in the season-opening East-West Classic at Jamestown. The Demons defeated Fargo Shanley 2-0 after tying West Fargo 2-2. Alvin Garcia scored a goal in each game. Goalkeeper Todd Kessler had a 13-save shutout against Shanley. Parker Weisbeck and Devin Ciavarella combined for 14 stops against West Fargo.
20 YEARS AGO (1999): Cody Schmidt has been named the general manager of the Blaze, Bismarck's new entry in the Indoor Football League. The Blaze will begin play in the new league next spring. Schmidt is a graduate of Glen Ullin High School. He attended Dickinson State College and the University of Mary.
50 YEARS AGO (1969): Dale Carrier socked two home runs to lead host Mandan to a 6-3 victory over Omaha, Neb., in an elimination game at the Region 6 American Legion Baseball Tournament at Memorial Ballpark. Earlier, Collinsville, Ill., stayed unbeaten, clouting two home runs in an 11-3 victory over previously unbeaten Fargo. Fargo's Brian Neugebauer lost for the first time in 10 decisions this season.
