Woman Hit And Killed At Busy Roxbury Intersection

BOSTON (CBS) – A woman was struck and killed by a car at a busy intersection in Roxbury Monday morning.

It happened at the Mass. Ave. Connector at Melnea Cass Blvd. around 8 a.m. The driver stopped immediately after the crash.

The woman, who has not been identified, was rushed to Boston Medical Center where she died.

Police shut down the intersection, gathered evidence and then towed the 2016 Hyundai Accent, which had a smashed windshield.

Interstate 93 ramps to Exit 18 were closed for several hours for the investigation and reopened after the morning rush hour.

Police said the Hyundai was driven by a 34-year-old man from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was taken to Boston Medical Center for evaluation. There are no charges at this point in the investigation.

"It's a tragedy for the driver, it's a tragedy for the pedestrian," said Sue Sullivan, who saw the aftermath of the crash. "I'm so sorry something like this has happened and every day we just pray something like this doesn't happen again."

Many people who pass through here daily say this area is dangerous.

"It goes both ways with the drivers and pedestrians. I see a lot of times people will walk and the walk signal isn't on and, on the other hand, I see people running lights here," said Amanda Arauja.

"There are a lot of people weaving in and out of the street and I do worry about it every single day," said Sullivan.
