Chinese Hot Pot Chain to Bring Meat Wheels to Boston

A massive hot pot chain from China that has expanded to the United States has tapped Boston for a new growth opportunity. Liuyishou Hotpot — which operates more than 1,000 restaurants around the world, including three in the United States and more than a dozen in Canada — will take over the former Joy Luck Hot Pot space at 702 Washington St. in Chinatown, and could open by the end of the year.

Liuyishou Hotpot serves Chongqing-style hot pot, which is spicy due to the addition of Sichuan peppers. There are options for beef oil and vegetable oil broths, among others, and diners can choose hot pot ingredient combos, including vegetables, seafood, or beef and lamb. The meats come presented on a wooden wheel that wraps around the broth pot. There are a la carte items available as well.

Boston’s restaurant will be the fourth in the U.S. for Liuyishou Hotpot, which also plans to open a Seattle restaurant this year. The restaurant’s name means “one-armed Liu,” taking its name from its founder (who lost a hand in a car accident) and the word for thumbs-up, “yishou.” Eater has reached out for a more exact opening timeline for Liuyishou Hotpot’s Boston location, so stay tuned for more details on the arrival of meat wheels and spicy broths.
