A VISION of adult social care over the next three years has been released by Worcestershire County Council.

Nationally, there is growing pressure on social care as people are living for longer.

In Worcestershire the proportion of older people is already higher than the national average, at 17.3 per cent of the population, and going forward those aged aged 65 and older is projected to increase substantially.

It already accounts for 40 per cent of its £324million annual budget.

The County Council has stated its priority as being for older people and those with learning disabilities to become or remain independent, self-reliant and part of their local communities.

Its document, ‘Promoting Independence: Our Vision for Transforming Adult Social Care in Worcestershire’ sets out its key aims to 2022.

Coun Adrian Hardman (Con, Bredon) Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “We want everyone in Worcestershire to live healthy and happy lives and to stay independent for as long as possible.

“Our Adult Services Business Plan sets out our key priorities which include working much closer with partners and communities to ensure we are able to meet our aims.

“To do this we need to ensure people make responsible choices when planning their lives so they can achieve the best possible outcomes.”

The County aims to work with district, borough and parish councils on issues such as community safety, housing, leisure and economic regeneration.

The key partnership with local health services will be a central part of what is done with the intention of providing more ‘joined up’ care to make the whole health and social care system is more sustainable.

The plan will be reviewed on an annual basis and the County Council also intends to produce a local account of how well, or otherwise, progress is being made.
