PETERBOROUGH, ONT. — Construction is set to resume at Scotts Mills Dam at Lock 19 on the Trent-Severn Waterway near Peterborough, Ont.
The Parks Canada project and others of the agency are considered part of the its critical services to the public, noted a May 4 statement. As such, work has continued on them over the past several weeks.
Construction of the first two sluices and completion of the secant retaining wall on the eastern shoreline was ready to resume as early as the week of May 4.
Demolition and excavation are almost complete with construction of the pier, base slab and stilling basin to follow.
Pile driving is projected to resume in June.
The Scotts Mills Dam at Lock 19 serves such functions as flood mitigation, environmental protection and through navigation.
The scope of the project includes replacing the existing dam with a new dam that is intended to respect the historic look of the site and have a life expectancy of more than 80 years.
The new dam will optimize hydraulic capacity, increase the safety of water management operations and be constructed to improved access for maintenance activities, the release indicated. In addition, the new dam will have increased accessibility, with pedestrian access onto the dam itself once restored.
SNC-Lavalin is a contractor on the project.
