Carson City retention basins fill from storms, snow on the way into Friday morning
Retention basins around Carson City have been holding their own during the course of this week's storms, including the most visible ones near North Carson Street and Nye Lane. The basins will see more water as another storm system approaches.
A Flood Advisory was in effect for much of the Carson City region through 11:15 a.m. Thursday. As if 12:30 p.m. it had not been extended.
Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday night to noon Friday morning for Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Sparks and the Virginia City Highlands.
Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, except 3 to 8 inches above 5000 feet expected. Locally higher totals of 5 to 10 inches are possible for the foothills of the Carson Range, including the west side of Reno and Carson City in addition to Douglas County. The Virginia City Highlands could see 8 to 12 inches of snow. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph this evening with gusts to 30 mph Friday morning.
The heavy snow falling into the rain on roadways will create a slushy mess and there may be hidden areas of water under the snow. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening
commute. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
