Rain and melting snow prompt Flood Advisory for Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon regions

Continued rain on melting snow has prompted the National Weather Service to issue an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory on Thursday morning for Carson City, Douglas, Southern Washoe, Northern Lyon and Storey counties.

At 8:15 a.m. Doppler radar indicated areas of heavy rain will move through the northern Sierra and western Nevada this morning. Areas of flooding are occurring in urban areas and where snow and ice are blocking creeks and drainage paths. The advisory is until 11:15 a.m.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Reno, Carson City, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Graeagle, Kings Beach, Plumas Eureka State Park, Gardnerville, Virginia City, Boca Reservoir, Pyramid Lake, Incline Village, Blairsden, Doyle, Alpine Meadows, Stampede Reservoir, Squaw Valley, Herlong, Chilcoot and Sierraville.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots, according to the weather service.

The flood advisory also extends to the following areas: Plumas, Alpine, Placer, El Dorado, Sierra, Southern Lassen and Nevada counties in California, including much of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Meanwhile, Lyon County Emergency Management and Road Department are monitoring storm drainage throughout the Highway 50 corridor and south county. Currently a number of drainages are taking water as designed and so far there have been no reports of property damage, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.

Lyon County is watching the Atlas Retention Basin in southwest Dayton. After 2017, crews repaired the retention basin and so far the basin is doing its job and holding back storm water.

Crews are notifying residents in the west end of the Rancho's of south east Dayton that there is a potential for minor to moderate flooding and that can change based upon weather conditions.

Lyon County road crews have observed water making its way down the Virginia Range to the Tahoe Avenue Canal which dumps the water into Lahontan Reservoir. Crews report water over River Road in Dayton and are advising public to stay out of the area.

The River Road flooding comes from the Six Mile Canyon drainage and is flowing through to the Rolling A Open Space.

Lyon County has multiple sandbag locations in the Central Lyon Corridor:

— Silver Springs Animal Control Yard.
— Stagecoach Community Center.
— Outside of gate at 200 Lakes Blvd, Road/Utilities Yard.
— Fire Station on Red Rock Rd, Moundhouse.
— Silver City Community Center.

Meanwhile, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. for much of the region. South to southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts 50 to 60 mph. Wind prone locations including the Highway 395, I-580 corridor could see gusts of 60 to 70 mph.

The weather service advises hazardous travel is expected for high profile vehicles. Damage to trees and power lines is also possible along with minor structural damage. Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries or candles in the event of a power outage.

Another storm is expected to move into the area late Thursday night into Friday, according to the weather service. Snow is expected during the Friday morning commute across western Nevada valleys including Reno and Sparks, Fernley, Carson City, Carson Valley communities, and I-80 and Highway 50 corridors. Although we could see snow as early as Thursday evening, the peak of the heaviest snow is expected late Thursday night through early Friday morning.
