Lake effect snow prompts Winter Weather Advisory for Carson City, Carson Valley region
Another round of moderate snowfall around Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno this Sunday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the region.
Around Carson City, accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected with 2 to 5 inches for foothill areas, according to the weather service. However as of mid-morning, many locations around Carson City reported more than 3 inches in town and 6-plus inches in the foothills.
As of noon, around 4 to 6 inches of snow around Carson City has been reported around town.
The advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday night. Plan on slippery road conditions. A few inches of accumulating snow will occur across western Nevada valleys mainly through the Sierra Front.
Lake effect snow bands coming off of Lake Tahoe may produce localized heavy snowfall through the Carson Range and extending through Washoe and Carson Valleys.
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. for Lake Tahoe and much of the Sierra.
The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 511 or logging onto NVroads.com.
For Lake Tahoe and Sierra, the weather service says to expect continued significant travel impacts Sunday through the Sierra. Avoid travel if possible. Be prepared for road closures as well. Always check the latest road conditions and make sure to carry chains and an emergency kit.
