Wooly Guardians of Carson City set to the task of fire-prevention once again
In Nevada, we have two seasons: winter and fire. At the moment, we're right on the cusp of fire season, and our proactive sheep friends from Borda Family Lamb Ranch have risen to the challenge to help preventing fire devastation in Carson City for another year.
For more than 100 years, the Borda Family Lamb Ranch has been raising sheep in the Carson Valley as well as keeping basque traditions alive and well in Nevada. Carson City has utilized them for years to help cut down on fire damage caused by dry grasses in the hills.
The ewes and lambs were released into the hills earlier this week along with their shepherds, who have set up their camp in the hills behind Greenhouse Garden Center, and they'll be in charge of grazing 2,000 acres of Carson City foothills until they move on.
Currently, they spend their mornings spanning out in the hills munching away, and in the afternoons they retreat to the canyon in the hills for water, according to Ted Borda of the Borda Family Lamb Ranch.
