— Driver's Education classes offered this week through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education. 8 a.m. Western Nevada College offers 30 hours of new driver education. The class meets requirements to obtain a Nevada driver's license. It uses lectures, interactive CD's, guest speakers and videos in a classroom setting to cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and challenging situations. Open to students ages 15 and above. PLEASE NOTE: Driver Education class fees are non-refundable. The class is $100. Call 775-445-4241 for signup information.

HeartSmart: Stroke and Vascular Screenings. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Are you at risk for stroke or heart disease? Find out with a low-cost screening. Carson City Library Presents: Explore Earth Exhibit. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet, a national traveling exhibition exploring a global view of our changing environment, will be on display at the Carson City Library. Getting people interested in science can be a challenge, but Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet strives to make it fun with a focus on local earth science topic, such as weather, the water cycle and ecosystem changes as well as a global look at our changing planet. 900 North Roop Street.

Capital City Reads: Carson City Library April program features 'Station Eleven.' 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Happening through April. The Carson City Library invites everyone in Carson City to participate in a community read of "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel for the library’s annual Capital City Reads program during the month of April. Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion. "Station Eleven" explores the role of arts and culture in creating and keeping the community connections that keep humanity alive after a devastating flu pandemic brings civilization as we know it to an end. This book was chosen to align with this year’s theme for National Library Week: Libraries = Strong Communities. Copies of Station Eleven in English and Spanish will be available at the Carson City Library while supplies last. Thursday Hike to Ash to Kings Canyon Trail (partial) hosted by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered on its free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the end of the asphalt of Ash Canyon Road to carpool to trailhead. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. In case of bad weather, we will cancel. Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.

Nevada Humanities recognizes Capital City Arts Initiative, Carson City Arts and Culture director. 4:30 p.m. Every other year, Nevada Humanities honors the achievements of individuals and organizations from across the Silver State that foster cultural enrichment and deepen our understanding of the of the human experience by facilitating opportunities for Nevadan’s to engage with the humanities. On April 18, 2019, 11 extraordinary individuals and organizations will be honored for their outstanding contributions to Nevada’s communities using the tools of the humanities to strengthen and enhance the lives of the people of Nevada. Each of the 11 awardees will be on hand to accept their awards during the ceremony held at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno on Thursday, April 18, 2019, with a reception beginning at 4:30 pm, and the awards program beginning at 6:00 pm. Carson City's CASA hosts volunteer information hour, training Thursday and again April 25. 5:30 p.m. It's that time of year again! CASA of Carson City is looking for a few good men and women to join the ranks of our CASA volunteers. Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers advocate in court on behalf of children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Their best-interest advocacy helps assure children are safe, have a permanent home and have the opportunity to thrive. Capital City Poetry Circle at the Carson City Library. 6 to 7 p.m. In honor of National Poetry Month and our Capital City Reads selection, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, let’s explore poetry! Experimenting with Acrylics and Mixed Media at Rustically Divine. 6:30 p.m. The best of both worlds comes together in this exiting and diverse art class. Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

Paiute artist’s work displayed at Nevada Legislature. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.
“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.” Melero-Moose’s work is featured in the exhibit, “Translating Paiute,” which went on display Monday, April 8 at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery inside the Nevada Legislative Building. 401 S Carson Street, Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association 'Spring has Sprung' show underway at the BAC in Carson City. 10 a.m. daily except Mondays. Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

Watercolor Exploration classes offered in March and April through WNC's Continuing Education. Whether you are a new or continuing watercolor student, learn to splash and play while discovering the expansive possibilities of watercolor at classes offered through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education program. In each 4-week class, we will explore several different approaches to watercolor. We will also investigate art fundamental topics concentrating on one topic per 4-week session. Students may choose their own subjects, with instructor input as to relevance based on individual skill level. Supplies require. Potential watercolor approaches include: wet-on-dry, wet-into-wet, watercolor pouring, wet-to-dry, layering, pulling-the-bead, alla prima painting, plein air and more. Potential fundamental topics include: color temperature, color value, compositional design, color harmony, drawing principles, avoiding common pitfalls, artwork presentation, painting from life, and more. Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

"Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! On April 9, Sierra Nevada Forums, in partnership with the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, will host “The truth about Carson City road funding: straight from the horse’s mouth.”

Mark Twain Days Festival is back this year, May 10-12, with some big changes. Visit Carson City approached the Brewery Arts Center and asked them to partner for the planning of the second year of the festival, which is held in honor of Mark Twain, our region’s most famous writer.

Celebrating its Spring Fling Bunco fundraiser, Soroptimist International of Carson City will begin with a stuffed baked potato bar including bacon, butter, sour cream, broccoli and a side salad at 5:30pm. A no-host bar will be available. At 6:30pm the fun begins including prizes for top Bunco achievers.

United Federal Credit Union is expanding its footprint in Nevada. United opened a new branch in Minden on Monday, March 18, 2024. United has been operating in Nevada since 2009. The Minden branch is United’s ninth location in the state.

The Hangar Tavern is Carson City’s newest bar that offers casino gaming machines, which opened up shop about two months ago off Airport Road.

The airplane-themed business is split sectioned, with the tavern taking up space on one side, which includes several seating options and multiple flat screen televisions for watching sports, while gaming takes up the other half.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation is granting local workforce boards $5 million to address barriers to employment.

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by Music Director David Bugli and Assistant Conductor Brian Fox, presents a concert, "We Got Rhythm," on Sunday, April 28, at 4 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E William Street in Carson City.

Carson Middle School English Teacher Rhonda Holloway, Seeliger Elementary Fourth Grade Teacher Toni Nielson and Mark Twain Fourth Grade Teachers Kylie Jensen and Alyson Haas were recent recipients of the “Apple Award” from the Delta Kappa Gamma NU Chapter in the total amount of $500. There were more than 14 total applicants. Delta Kappa Gamma is an educational organization of teachers who support other teachers.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating a battery which occurred at a Carson City bar on March 17, 2024. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has obtained surveillance footage of the incident and is attempting to identify the suspect in the pictures above.

On Tuesday, March 26, at approximately 7 a.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and East Fork Fire responded to the 900 block of Arrowhead Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos for a report of an unconscious individual lying on the side of the road.

Another early spring storm system will move into the Carson City area and surrounding counties Wednesday bringing gusty winds, valley rain and mountain snow to the region, according to the National Weather Service.

A saturation event was organized last week by the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Office of Traffic Safety, and Sheriff's Traffic Enforcement Team to improve traffic safety in the Mound House area.

According to Redfin, home prices in Nevada were up 9.7 percent year-over-year in February 2024. At the same time, the number of homes for sale in the state fell by 20.8 percent. While home prices are on the rise, the supply of homes for sale is not meeting demand, creating what is considered a “tight” housing market across the Silver State.
