Carson City deputies book woman for felony child neglect after leaving 3 month old baby alone during warrant arrest
A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for felony child abuse and neglect, violation of a Temporary Protective Order, and a contempt of court warrant.
According to the arrest report, Maria Olvera was arrested Thursday afternoon in the 2700 block of Dori Wy. by Special Enforcement Team deputies after they were dispatched on a warrant service to Olvera’s home.
Deputies knocked on the door and Olvera came and spoke with deputies. They told her she was under arrest on the warrant, and asked if anyone else was inside the house. She was adamant that no one else was inside the residence and stated she did not want deputies inside the home.
After deputies placed Olvera in their patrol unit, deputies did a safety sweep of the residence to check for children since the door was open.
Inside the house, deputies located a 3 month old baby wrapped in a blanket in a swing. It was approximately 80 degrees inside the house, according to deputies.
Deputies stated that Olvera lied to them about other people being in her house and “was willing to leave her 3 month old baby inside a hot house wrapped in a blanket, and she was going to let her 3 month old baby sit in the swing in her room with no parent supervision or food,” according to the report.
Deputies also located a 16-year-old juvenile hiding in her bedroom between two beds on the floor, and would not answer any questions and “had a bad attitude.” Deputies determined the juvenile was “not fit to care of a 3 month old baby.”
Deputies later learned that there was an active order against Olvera that prohibits her from having any contact with the juvenile due to a prior case. The order “specifically states that visitation between Ms. Ovlera and the children be suspended until a written and signed supervision plan is complete between Ms. Olvera and the Division” which was never completed.
SET Deputies requested Child Protective Services to arrive at the residence. CPS arrived and stated they would take custody of the 16-year-old because she is not to have any contact with her mother. The 16-year-old’s stepfather arrived on scene to take custody of the 3 month old baby.
Olvera was taken into custody on the warrant, the TPO violation, and child neglect.
No bail on warrant
— A 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 800 block of Randell Dr. on domestic battery first offense after allegedly striking his mother with a plastic crate and a memory foam pillow.
According to the report, Matthew James Smith was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the residence and met with the mother. She stated that her adult son, Smith, lives with her and when he came into the house he was irate. She said Smith threw a plastic crate at her, striking her. She initially was unsure where it struck her, but later said her left elbow. She said he also hit her in the side of her face with a pillow.
She advised the pillow was heavier than a normal pillow so it “hurt when it struck her.” Deputies found the memory foam style pillow, which they estimated to weigh around 5 pounds.
Deputies spoke with another male who lived in the home who confirmed what the mother had told deputies, and showed a video of the incident. The video did not show Smith striking his mother, but instead showed he was irate and was yelling.
Deputies spoke with Smith, who denied ever striking his mother with any items.
He was taken into custody without issue.
