El Dorado County sheriff's deputy shot and killed in line of duty, two suspects in custody
An El Dorado County, Calif., sheriff's deputy was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in the town of Somerset near Placerville. Deputy Brian Ishmael, a four-year veteran of the department, died as a result of the shooting. Two people are in custody.
It was a tense scene early Wednesday morning as law enforcement on the ground and in the air responded to the area of Sand Ridge Road in Somerset, south of Placerville. Deputy Ishmael had a ride-along in his car when they arrived at the residence. That person, an off-duty San Joaquin County law enforcement officer, was also injured and has undergone surgery.
Officers on the ground an a CHP helicopter flying over the scene used night-vision goggles, and led deputies on the ground to two men who were hiding in the woods near the home, as heard via police scanner. Two men are in custody and it is unknown at this time if they were injured.
No other details are being released at this time as the area on Sand Ridge Road is still an active crime scene, according to the sheriff's office.
From what could be heard over the scanner, the occupant of the residence arrived home and found an unknown car on his driveway. He went inside and called 911.
EDSO has asked people to remain out of this area and advises for all to "remain vigilant and call 911 for any suspicious activity."
Deputy Ishmael previously worked for Placerville Police Department. He was married with three children.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," said EDSO in a press release.
“The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors shares the deep sadness and grief over the senseless killing of Deputy Sheriff Brian Ishmael this morning while responding to a call for service," said the Chair of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, Sue Novasel.
“Deputy Ishmael gave the ultimate sacrifice while trying to keep our residents safe," said Novasel. "We are fortunate to have the dedicated and outstanding law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day in that pursuit. In his honor, all County flags will fly at half staff. With deep gratitude for Deputy Ishmael’s service, and on behalf of the entire Board of Supervisors, our thoughts and prayers are with the Ishmael family and his extended family within the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.”
In El Dorado County and the city of South Lake Tahoe, flags are being flown at half-staff.
