ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) - Albany Airport firefighter Josh Woodward is recovering after a below knee amputation on Wednesday.

"Surgery is complete and everything went great! Healthy bone and healthy muscle," Woodward's wife Chelsea wrote on Facebook. "On to recovering and making some decisions about whether or not he will make another short stay at rehab after his time here. Thank you for all the prayers. We could feel it."

Chelsea had previously written on Facebook that it was hoped the amputation would solve some remaining issues, get Josh off painkillers and help get him back to the firehouse.

"If you ask Josh what is most important to him moving forward it would be being able to return to work as a firefighter and to be able to run," Chelsea wrote in an earlier Facebook post. "With a below knee amputation, he can. He can do both, all things."

Josh Woodward bravely battled sepsis earlier this year. He spent two months in the hospital and had numerous surgeries including the removal of all 10 toes and a hand.

Woodward's journey has garnered significant attention. A Facebook page chronicling his saga has over 86,000 likes, and a GoFundMe for the family has netted over $124,000.
