1 Dead After Off-Duty Officer's Car Crashes Into Restaurant In Gresham

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman has died after an off-duty Chicago police officer crashed into a restaurant in the 1700 block of West 87th Street, pinning the woman under his car Sunday.

The 34-year-old woman was sitting inside Tony's Philly Steak restaurant around 2:40 a.m. when she was pinned underneath the car. She was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Hospital.

Chicago police confirm the driver of the vehicle that went into the building was an off-duty officer in his personal vehicle. Police said the off-duty officer was charged with a DUI.

Another woman inside the restaurant suffered a leg injury, and the driver suffered a neck injury.

The driver said before hitting the restaurant, he was trying to avoid a crash when another driver cut him off on South Wood Street. The driver then made a sharp turn and jumped a curb.

Chicago Police said the other vehicle involved continued driving and is unknown. Major Accidents is on scene investigating.
