A man was killed during a domestic dispute Sunday in Fernwood on the South Side.

Jeffery Berry, 41, was involved in a domestic argument with a 31-year-old woman about 6 a.m. in the 10400 block of South Eggleston, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

During the argument, the woman hit him on or near his head with a blunt object, police said.

Berry, who lived in the same block, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

An autopsy Monday found he died of asphyxia caused by compression of his chest and neck, the medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled a homicide.

The woman was taken into custody but released without charges for this incident, police said. She was, however, charged with a misdemeanor count of violating probation on an unrelated warrant.

Area South detectives are investigating.
