A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Monday evening in Bridgeport on the South Side.

He was in the back seat of a vehicle about 8:10 p.m. when a male suspect on foot shot him in the 3300 block of South Lituanica Avenue, Chicago police said.

He was hit in the back and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Jerome Mazutis. An autopsy confirmed he died of a gunshot wound to the back and ruled his death a homicide.

The shooting is Bridgeport’s second homicide of the year, according to Sun-Times records.

On March 22, a 38-year-old was shot to death in the 3100 block of South Benson Street. Brandon Jones died at a hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. Police arrested two people seen driving away from the shooting, but they were released shortly after without being charged.

In nonfatal shootings this year, a 48-year-old man was wounded by gunfire March 5 in an alley in the 3700 block of South Parnell Avenue, and a 16-year-old boy was wounded in a drive-by Feb. 16 in the 900 block of West 31st Street.
