The Kansas City Chiefs have made a roster move to solidify their tight end depth as they deal with injuries.

According to a report from Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick, the Chiefs are set to sign former Ravens TE Nick Keizer. This move comes following the decision to release veteran tight end John Phillips just a week after he signed with the team.

Keizer played collegiate football at Grand Valley State and entered the NFL during the 2018 season. He went undrafted and ended up signing with the Ravens following the draft. After failing to make the Ravens 53-man roster out of training camp, Keizer spent the entire 2018 season on the Ravens practice squad. He was signed to a reserve/futures deal with the Ravens, but was waived in the middle of May.

Keizer is set to join the Chiefs as they deal with a few injuries at the TE position. Both Travis Kelce and Deon Yelder are dealing with injuries which leaves only three tight ends available during OTAs.

The skill set that Keizer brings to the table is an intriguing one. At 6-4 and 250 pounds, Keizer is a big body that excels in the blocking game. Don’t sleep on his ability as a receiver either. During his career at Grand Valley State, Keizer caught 45 passes 11 of which scored touchdowns. During his senior season, Keizer had a 17.4 yard-per-catch average. Travis Kelce never exceeded 16.0 yards per catch during his time in college as a reference point, but keep in mind that Grand Valley State is a D-II school.

This move is not yet official and likely won’t be until the NFL’s transaction report comes out later today. It will put the Chiefs at a full 90-man offseason roster, so if the Chiefs want to make any more roster changes, they’ll need a corresponding move.
