Colts’ Pierre Desir listed as ‘must re-sign’

The Indianapolis Colts will have plenty of decisions to make this offseason when it comes to free agency, and re-signing some of their own is among those choices.

While there are several Colts that have a case to be re-signed, cornerback Pierre Desir is one of the pending free agents that  most believe should get another contract.

Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport is among those that believes Desir is the one player that should be re-signed for the Colts this offseason.

The 2018 season was really Desir’s coming-out party. In 16 games (and 12 starts), Desir logged 79 total tackles—nearly as many as his first four seasons combined. As the season progressed and the Colts got hot, Desir became the team’s top cornerback, and in two late-season meetings with the Houston Texans, Desir helped limit one of the league’s most dangerous wide receivers (DeAndre Hopkins) to nine catches for 73 yards.

Those two performances alone are enough for Desir to get a fat raise.

Playing in a zone-heavy defensive scheme, Desir’s physicality in press allowed him to thrive during the second half of the season. He even showed the ability to play some solid man coverage at times, most notably against Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in Week 14.

Desir also stood out in the cornerback room due to his ability against the run, which is imperative for the cornerbacks in Matt Eberflus’ scheme.

It remains to be seen if the Colts will re-sign Desir, but he’s proven to be a quality starter and if they add some younger depth in the draft, he would likely serve as a solid veteran presence in the secondary.
