Fair warning to those who frequent the Taco Bell at the corner of East High and North Spring Garden streets in Carlisle for their burrito fix.
The restaurant will be demolished to make way for a more upscale model. Changes will also be made to better accommodate drive-thru traffic.
“Essentially, the building will be longer and skinnier,” said Michael Skelly, the borough’s planning/zoning/codes manager.
Skelly said a timeline for the changes has not been disclosed, but the plans are expected to be presented to the borough’s planning commission at a Sept. 27 meeting. If approved, those plans could be in front of the borough council at its Oct. 11 meeting.
There are no plans to acquire additional land for the restaurant that sits on a 0.88-acre tract.
An old PP&L office building was torn down to make way for the restaurant in 1995 after several months of debate centering largely on traffic issues. In addition to then-members of the borough council and planning commission expressing concern about traffic, lawyers representing a nearby McDonald’s also pleaded their case that the site was not appropriate for the Taco Bell.

News of the redesign of the Taco Bell restaurant comes as work is again underway on the diagonal corner for a planned El Rodeo restaurant.
Skelly said there had been problems with the site development, but that renovations to the former 7-11 and real estate office will hopefully be completed by Thanksgiving.
The current El Rodeo at 852 N. Hanover St. will be closed and its liquor license transferred to the new location at 398 E. High St.
