WSU swimming dropped its final meet of the regular season 167-93 to Utah on Saturday at Gibb Pool.

The Cougars (4-7, 1-5) honored senior Linnea Lindberg in her last meet at Gibb Pool.

“This was a great send off for our senior Linnea,” Leach said . “It’s important we make sure we’re healthy and well rested for moving forward.”

Sophomore Mackenzie Duarte led the Cougars by winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.39, which nearly broke the Gibb Pool record.

Duarte also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke, third in the 400-yard individual medley and was apart of the third place 200-yard medley relay team. Sophomore Taylor McCoy, sophomore Kelly Morgan and freshman Paige Gardner were also on that relay team.

Lindberg, freshman Lauren Burckel, freshman Sophia Balmaceda and sophomore Chloe Larson placed second in the 200 medley relay.

Junior Ryan Falk placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.23, Larson grabbed second in the 50-yard freestyle and McCoy took second in the 200-yard backstroke. Falk also claimed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Freshman Keiana Fountaine earned second in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. She also swam alongside freshman Emily Barrier, Balmaceda and Larson in the 400-yard freestyle relay. They placed second in the event with a 3:31.87, the third-fastest time for the team this season.

It was a tough loss for the Cougars, but Leach said he wasn’t too upset with his teams performance.

“As we get closer to Pac [12 Championships] we start cutting down on the training and [start] resting a little bit more,” Leach said. “We want to make sure everybody is healthy.”

Overall, the meet went in favor of the Utes (5-4, 2-4) with them taking home first in all but one event.

WSU now looks forward to the Pac-12 Championships Feb. 27-March 2 in Federal Way, Washington.
