Following a lengthy hiatus, the Concord Jazz Festival is set to return for a 50th anniversary concert featuring performances by saxophonist Dave Koz and Friends, Grammy-winning bassist Esperanza Spalding, keyboardist Chick Corea and others, promoters Live Nation and Concord Jazz announced on Monday, April 15.

The festival, a summer staple at the Concord Pavilion until its last run in 2004, is scheduled to return to the East Bay venue on Aug. 3.

“The Concord Jazz Festival was a cornerstone of the Concord Pavilion concert season for years, and we’re thrilled to bring this iconic event back for the 50th anniversary celebration,” said Aaron Siuda, senior vice president of Live Nation Northern California. “In conjunction with Concord Jazz, we’ve put together a stellar lineup that showcases many of the great artists that Concord Jazz represents.”

Other acts on the bill include the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra featuring Patti Austin, Jamison Ross, Carmen Bradford, and Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band, with more names to be announced soon.

The first Concord Jazz Festival, founded by the late Carl Jefferson, took place at Concord Avenue neighborhood park in 1969. Among the featured performers were Erroll Garner, Vince Guaraldi, Lalo Schifrin, Stan Kenton, Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Jean-Luc Ponty, Carmen McRae, Don Ellis, Shelly Manne, Mel Torme and the Buddy Rich Band.

Six years later Jefferson, having by then started Concord Jazz Records, served as the driving force behind construction of the Concord Pavilion — known as “the house that jazz built” — in 1975.

Tickets for the 50th anniversary festival, which range from $39.50 to $149.50, will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, April 19, online at www.livenation.com or in person at the Concord Pavilion box office at 2000 Kirker Pass Road.
