Chicago Bulls: Coby White has earned time over Kris Dunn

Through a few preseason games, Coby White has already proven he’s clearly a better option for the Chicago Bulls than Kris Dunn.

The Chicago Bulls have been a blast to watch through a few preseason games. If you’re a Bulls fan, you can finally feel the tides beginning to turn in Chicago. The young core in place has looked promising.

These guys are unselfish, exciting and they play with a pace we haven’t seen in Chicago for quite some time. The Bulls have scorers at every position, giving them plenty of versatility when pushing the ball up the court. Zach LaVine has come out swinging in the preseason, leading many to believe he could wind up a hometown All Star next year over All Star Weekend 2020 in Chicago.

Aside from LaVine, Otto Porter Jr. looks well-worth the trade which brought him to Chicago last year. He’s been great both as a shooter and facilitator — not to mention, he’s an underrated defender.

One of the most exciting pieces to this year’s puzzle has been the play of rookie first-round pick Coby White.

White is currently third in preseason scoring among rookies at 16.8 points per game. He sits only behind Jordan Poole (18.0) and Zion Williamson (23.3).

His most impressive performance thus far was in his 30 minutes against the Indiana Pacers. In that game, White ended his night with 24 points on 10-for-22 shooting and eight rebounds.

While White is more of a volume scorer, needing to get in a rhythm just a bit, that might not be a bad thing for the Bulls. He has proved to be valuable at both the point guard position as well as the two guard. This year, we could see the Bulls mixing and matching White with other guards like Tomas Satoransky and Zach LaVine because of their versatility as a trio.

Another big thing that has stuck out to me about the Bulls’ point guard group this preseason, though, has been the lack of confidence in Kris Dunn. He has hardly been getting time with starters, mainly playing with the second and third unit.

If White has taught us anything this preseason, it’s that he belongs with the ones. Of course, Satoransky will be the starter. But, White belongs on that level. He will see plenty of time, and Dunn will not — it’s really that simple.

White offers so much more to the Bulls than Dunn ever has, to be truthful. You really notice it on offense, though. White’s size at 6-foot-6 allows him to be a mismatch at the point guard spot, and fit right in with the shooting guards. He’s physical and aggressive offensively, but has the game to back it up.

At times, we’ve seen Dunn try too hard and end up forcing things offensively. Dunn has never had the scoring game to back up his defensive efforts. That’s where White differs. The rookie is electric. He’s quick off the dribble and knows how to create offense for himself — Dunn on the other hand? Not so much.

Fans should be thrilled with the Bulls snagging White seventh overall in this year’s draft. He will prove every bit worthy of that draft position, and maybe the Bulls even see some postseason play because of it.
