Is Netflix Still Making a ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ Series?

Netflix thrilled Chronicles of Narnia fans in 2018 when the streamer announced they’d be adapting C.S. Lewis’ books into movies and shows on the platform. But since then, not much has been heard about the new Narnia material — until recently, that is. Twitter lit up with excitement when fake posters were spread around for the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia series, leading fans to believe Netflix was releasing it soon.

One of the clues that tipped people off was the image in The Last Battle poster, which looks familiar because most of us have seen it before. The figure gripping a sword is not from Narnia, but Game of Thrones: it’s Oathkeeper.

The fake promotional posters also contradicted what Douglas Gresham, Lewis’ stepson and Narnia producer, said about his deal with Netflix in an interview two weeks ago. Gresham spoke to William O’Flaherty for 90 Seconds to Knowing C.S. Lewis, and he didn’t have a promising update. “I have not heard a word from them,” he said, per Screen Rant. “I’m kind of getting worried myself as to whether anything’s ever going to happen.”

So what exactly is going on? Here’s what we know about Chronicles of Narnia and Netflix:

Is Netflix Making Chronicles of Narnia?

Short answer: yes. Despite Gresham’s comments, Netflix is still developing Chronicles of Narnia content based on Lewis’ books. In a recent development, Coco co-writer Matthew Aldrich was announced as creative architect on all Narnia projects last year.

Netflix has not announced specifics, but Gresham told O’Flaherty that he’s hoping for an episodic adaptation. “[I’d] love it to be an episodic thing,” he said. “Because with a movie, you have an hour, maybe two hour maximum if you really stretch it, to put an entire book — an adventure storybook — into the film. And you just can’t do it.”

When Is Chronicles of Narnia on Netflix?

Netflix has not determined a release date for their upcoming Chronicles of Narnia content. But, with seven books in the series, there’s a lot of material to cover, which could explain why the series is taking some time to develop. We’ll keep you updated if Netflix announces a release date.
